Most people can spot content slop within a sentence. You know the type: the overly formulaic and unnaturally worded LinkedIn post, the blog that says nothing in 1,200 words, the email that offers an easy fix if you'll only "follow my one-of-a-kind AI runbook" (and pay for it). It's annoying, it costs a few seconds of attention, and then you scroll past it.

The more expensive kind of AI slop shows up in a different place. *Automation slop* is work a tool now does at scale to "improve" a process nobody ever defined, agreed on, or checked. It runs on rules three people would describe three different ways, against fields that mean something different depending on who filled them in. It keeps running because nothing about it looks broken – and worse, it becomes the source of truth for running the business.

To be clear, I use AI and build CRM/MAP automations every day, and it takes real work off my plate. My issue is with the version of it that's all over LinkedIn, implying that a copy/paste of prompts and skills will work for anyone who downloads them.

In September, Dreamforce and UNBOUND dominated the GTM conversation and a lot of the talk around automation focused on speed. Salesforce's August 2026 Agentic Enterprise Index put the average time from building an agent to putting it to work at two days. Building is fast. Deciding *what* gets built takes longer, and it's the step most teams skip.

## Why it's harder to spot

Content slop fails in public. Automation slop fails in private, and in Sales and Marketing it shows up in three places, one after the other.

It starts in the revenue model itself. Funnel stage targets are built on baseline conversion and win-rate data – if it exists – and the model informs everything that will come next. If the modeling, reporting, and funnel mechanics are understood differently by different stakeholders, assumptions end up feeding the agent or workflow and that lack of clarity compounds on itself.

Next, it hits the tech stack. A lead-scoring workflow fires exactly as designed, on agreed qualification criteria, but then feeds a routing and triage process that isn't fully defined. All of it shows green on the automation dashboard, because the automation did exactly what it was told.

Then it moves into the funnel. Qualified leads go dormant and only surface again when the monthly revenue meeting focuses on conversion rates and pipeline generation. Some stuff's working, some isn't – but it's not clear why. That's where the bill comes due and the promise of the automation's productivity improvement breaks down.

## Why it costs more

Camunda's AI Process Gap report, published in September 2026, surveyed 1,000 process decision makers and 5,000 employees in the US and Europe. Seventy-two percent of the decision makers said process problems had caused AI initiatives to fail, at an average cost of $1.55 million. Forty-four percent of employees said they manually override AI outputs because the process underneath wasn't set up right.

Camunda sells process software, so read that with the obvious caveat. But the override number is the one that resonated with me. It means the automation is running and people are quietly working around it, and that's exactly why it's hard to see. Kurt Petersen at Camunda described the pattern as companies "applying it to processes designed for a world before AI, then wondering why the return on investment falls short."

> **Content slop wastes attention. Automation slop wastes pipeline.**

## What to do instead

HBR made the same case from the workforce side in August 2026. Hoque, Davenport and Scade wrote that "a more effective approach starts not with headcount targets but with the work itself: breaking roles into tasks, identifying where AI can genuinely improve performance."

In a revenue team, "the work itself" is mostly definitions, and none of them are technical. All of them are what the automation will be built on.

Here's my process test. Before a step gets automated, ask two people on the team (in most of my cases, one Marketing and one Sales) to write down, in one paragraph, what that step does and why. If the paragraphs don't match, there isn't a process to automate yet. There's a disagreement, and the tool will run it at scale.

Content slop wastes attention. Automation slop wastes pipeline, and it does it while every dashboard says things are fine.

### Not sure which of your automations are running on undefined work?

Bring me the workflow nobody on your team can fully explain. In one conversation we'll work out what it was supposed to do, what it actually does, and what needs defining before anything else gets automated.
